Transfer a commercial story, not a calendar slot
Keep the handoff concise and labeled. Separate public research from buyer statements, and preserve the original context for verification. Include what the buyer expects from the next conversation so the AE does not open with an unrelated pitch.
Define the receiving owner's decision and response process. A returned record should explain what is missing, not just say unqualified. Rejections should improve targeting or messaging. Keep no-show and reschedule responsibility explicit so a handoff does not disappear when the calendar changes.
| Decision | Evidence to use | What changes next |
|---|---|---|
| Why this account | Fit, source and disqualifier check | AE can verify relevance |
| What the buyer said | Reply, problem and meeting purpose | AE can continue the conversation accurately |
| What happens next | Unknowns, mutual action and owner | AE accepts or returns with a specific reason |
Work through the decision
Illustrative handoff: 'Enterprise-plan platform; public access tiers linked. Engineering lead asked how changes are synchronized. Current pain not yet confirmed. Discovery purpose: understand the workflow and standard integration fit. Product colleague available for technical limits. AE accepts; finance role unknown.'
This is an honest developed conversation. If your opportunity rule requires buyer-confirmed pain, it may remain pre-opportunity until discovery. A useful handoff can be valuable without pretending it already meets every pipeline condition.
The AE starts over and the buyer repeats everything
If the buyer must restate a detailed reply, context has been lost. Include the conversation and expectation in the record. Respect access and recording consent; a concise accurate note is often more useful than an indiscriminate transcript dump.
A concrete next step
Use the handoff worksheet in the qualification guide for your next five conversations. Ask AEs which field changed their preparation and remove fields that add no decision value.
