Fit the SDR service to the receiving sales team
Begin with the AEs' actual capacity and qualification needs. An SDR team cannot create quality by booking more conversations than sellers can handle. Define the account conditions, contact roles, accepted evidence and owner of each next action.
Evaluate a small operating sample rather than a generic meeting quota. Ask how the provider handles poor fit, missing authority, no-shows and opt-outs. Check whether rejected handoffs change targeting and coaching. A provider that cannot explain its exceptions may produce volume while leaving your team with cleanup work.
| Decision | Evidence to use | What changes next |
|---|---|---|
| Account selection | Shared ICP, sources and disqualifiers | Avoid developing conversations the AEs cannot serve |
| Conversation development | Responsible contact, reply handling and context | Prepare a useful handoff rather than a bare calendar event |
| Acceptance and learning | AE decision, rejection reason and feedback loop | Improve quality while preserving clear ownership |
Work through the decision
Illustrative pilot: an AE reviews five handoffs from a narrow cohort. Two are accepted, one needs a missing stakeholder, and two are poor fit. The pilot counts and causes are illustrative, not expected performance.
The SDR team corrects coverage and disqualifiers before expanding. The AE also checks whether its own response delay lost useful conversations. This joint review prevents quality from becoming a one-sided dispute and shows whether the operating model works with your team.
The quota exceeds the team's ability to act
AEs can become the bottleneck when booking capacity grows faster than discovery coverage. Include calendar capacity and follow-up ownership in the scope. More meetings should not be the remedy for abandoned conversations.
A concrete next step
Run a small reviewed handoff sample before broad rollout. Have the receiving AEs record why each case is accepted, returned or rejected.
