Protect the AE's ownership while removing the bottleneck
Ask each AE where work is lost: weak account coverage, poor handoffs, administrative rework, technical evaluation or procurement. Decide which of those tasks an external team should own and which remain with the AE. Do not assign two teams to the same account without a coordination rule.
Use the existing CRM where feasible, with named access and clear field responsibility. Document account assignments, suppression, contact ownership and how positive replies reach the AE. A support team should make the opportunity record more usable, not require the AE to reconstruct conversations from an external spreadsheet.
| Decision | Evidence to use | What changes next |
|---|---|---|
| Account research | AE reviews rationale and disqualifiers for a cohort | Approve coverage before outreach begins |
| Development handoff | Evidence and next action meet agreed acceptance rules | AE accepts, returns or rejects with a reason |
| Specialist progression | Evaluation or procurement task has one named owner | AE retains commercial context and the mutual plan |
Work through the decision
Illustrative example: an outsourced SDR identifies a contact already involved in an AE's active evaluation. Without account rules, a new cold sequence can confuse the buyer. The support workflow checks account state and contact ownership before sending; active opportunities route to the AE.
For new accounts, the SDR submits the agreed evidence and the AE accepts the conversation. The SDR can still help arrange attendance or find stakeholders, but the follow-up owner remains explicit. Review rejected handoffs jointly so targeting improves rather than becoming a recurring argument.
Two teams create two versions of the buyer
Duplicate records and parallel contact sequences can damage trust and attribution. Choose a stable account identifier and a single record for agreed buyer actions. Resolve duplicates and ownership before a provider imports or sequences a large account list.
A concrete next step
Select one AE and map their most expensive recurring bottleneck. Pilot a bounded support workflow and inspect five handoffs before expanding it to the whole team.
