Ask what changes after the strategy meeting
An execution partner should translate the strategy into an account cohort, offer, message test, qualification process and opportunity review. It should be able to show how buyer evidence changes the next decision. Deliverables such as slides remain useful only when someone applies them.
Distinguish the consultant's responsibilities from yours. Product decisions, technical expertise and exceptional approvals remain client-owned. Ask which parts the partner can operate independently and what work requires your team. A vague promise to be hands-on can still leave the founder doing all discovery and closing.
| Decision | Evidence to use | What changes next |
|---|---|---|
| Strategy to accounts | Reproducible segment and disqualifier rules | A researcher can create the next cohort |
| Accounts to buyers | Named seller, reply handling and discovery evidence | Conversations lead to owned decisions |
| Buyers to learning | Rejections, wins and adoption constraints are reviewed | The plan changes when evidence contradicts it |
Work through the decision
Illustrative candidate exercise: provide a short product brief and ask for the first week's operational decisions. A strategy-only answer may describe market categories. An execution answer specifies a bounded cohort, validation questions, who handles responses and which evidence prompts a change.
Neither answer proves future results. The exercise reveals what service you are buying and whether its process fits your gap. For a paid scope, carry the responsibilities and client dependencies into the agreement so execution does not depend on informal goodwill.
Execution is an optional add-on nobody owns
Ask who runs the first discovery call and maintains the opportunity record. If the answer is your founder despite a full-execution proposal, clarify the scope. A useful strategy engagement may still be the right choice, but price it as such.
A concrete next step
Take your current strategic bottleneck to a fit call and ask for the first concrete operating sequence. Compare it with the work your team can already do.
