A target list is the start of learning
Public evidence can establish a company's product, growth event or operating structure. It cannot establish private budget, intent or willingness to buy. A research brief should label observed facts, pain hypotheses, contact confidence and the next question clearly.
The $50,000 illustration is a way to explain potential account value, not a forecast of five wins. Actual deal values depend on your product and buyers. Keep target-account value outside accepted opportunity reporting until the agreed qualification conditions are met. This protects both the sales team and anyone reading the numbers.
| Decision | Evidence to use | What changes next |
|---|---|---|
| Observed fact | A source-backed product, event or company condition | Supports a relevant account hypothesis |
| Researched potential | Five accounts × assumed $10,000 annual value | Illustrates account value without claiming purchase intent |
| Accepted opportunity | Buyer-confirmed problem and an owned mutual next step | Requires discovery and commercial acceptance |
Work through the decision
Illustrative brief: five account records each include a source, likely stakeholder and opening question. One account publicly added enterprise billing features, so the hypothesis is that entitlement administration may be more complex. The research does not say the account has a $10,000 budget or wants a vendor.
After outreach, one buyer explains that its current process works well. That account may remain a plausible fit but is not an active opportunity. Another confirms a change project and agrees to a scoped conversation. Only subsequent qualification can establish pipeline under your definitions.
Research totals inflate the sales forecast
Multiplying accounts by assumed annual value can be helpful for prioritization, but it is not a probability-weighted forecast. Do not add that number to qualified pipeline or signed value. State the assumption wherever the illustration appears.
A concrete next step
Review one account from the brief and underline every statement that needs buyer validation. Turn those statements into neutral discovery questions before using the record in a forecast.
