Turn the rejection into a teachable decision
Begin with the record and actual buyer context. Ask what the SDR knew, what they inferred and which rule they applied. Identify whether the mistake came from unclear criteria, missing research, messaging or execution. A vague 'not qualified' label cannot guide improvement.
Choose one behavior to practice and write the evidence that distinguishes a correct case from an exception. Review the next few records rather than waiting for a monthly total. Also inspect AE consistency; coaching fails when the receiving team applies unstated or conflicting standards.
| Decision | Evidence to use | What changes next |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong account or role | Source and ICP rule did not support relevance | Practice fit and stakeholder coverage on unfamiliar accounts |
| Unsupported pain | Research inference was treated as buyer confirmation | Practice neutral validation questions and uncertainty labels |
| Weak next step | Handoff lacked purpose, owner or context | Rewrite the record and rehearse acceptance |
Work through the decision
Illustrative rejection: an SDR booked a technical contact at a company with no relevant product workflow. Review the source and disqualifier, then compare with a similar accepted account where the workflow is present.
The coaching task is to classify three new accounts and explain the reason before sending. If the criteria are ambiguous, repair the playbook rather than blame the SDR. Verify the next records show the changed judgment; a coaching session itself is not evidence of improvement.
The rejection reason never reaches the development team
If AEs reject privately, SDRs repeat the same mistake. Store a concise reason and review pattern changes. Protect sensitive buyer data while sharing the evidence needed to improve the decision.
A concrete next step
Review three rejected and one accepted handoff together. Write one revised rule, practice it on unfamiliar accounts and inspect the next sample for evidence of change.
