Assess the decisions the role will actually make
Start with the role's scope and boundaries. An SDR needs to apply the ICP, research responsibly, write relevant messages, handle replies and prepare a usable handoff. Different products require different technical context and escalation.
Use realistic, clearly labeled exercises with no live prospect sends. Include one strong-fit account, one disqualifier and a mixed reply with an opt-out. The assessor should explain the evidence behind the evaluation and avoid making a candidate's style match the only criterion. Keep hiring responsibility with the client.
| Decision | Evidence to use | What changes next |
|---|---|---|
| Account reasoning | Sources, fit and a valid rejection | Candidate can distinguish evidence from assumptions |
| Buyer communication | Accurate message and responsible reply handling | Candidate can be relevant without overclaiming |
| Handoff | Context, unknowns and next owner | Candidate prepares work an AE can accept |
Work through the decision
Illustrative exercise: the candidate researches a public account and proposes a workflow question. A second account requires an unsupported deployment model; the expected judgment is to reject or escalate, not invent a workaround.
Then provide a reply asking for information while requesting removal from the sequence. The candidate should respect suppression and identify any separate permissible next action for review. These exercises reveal operational judgment before a new hire is allowed to contact real buyers.
Hiring support is marketed as guaranteed recruitment
Assessment and ramp support do not mean unlimited sourcing, employment responsibility or guaranteed placement. Keep the scope explicit. The client decides who to hire and must allocate an internal manager to support the person.
A concrete next step
Write a role-specific exercise and rubric with your hiring team. Use anonymized or public examples and provide clear criteria before assessing candidates.
